If you want Microsoft Office without a Microsoft 365 subscription, you have two main one-time-purchase options: Office 2024 and Office 2021. Both give you Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook for a single payment, but they differ in features, support lifetime and price. Here’s what actually matters when choosing.
Quick Answer
- Choose Office 2024 if you want the newest features and the longest security support.
- Think carefully about Office 2021: Microsoft support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026. It still works, but it no longer gets security updates.
Release Dates and Support Lifecycle
This is the most important difference, and the one most comparison articles skip.
- Office 2021 was released in October 2021. Under Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy, support ended on October 13, 2026.
- Office 2024 was released on October 1, 2024. Microsoft lists its support end date as October 9, 2029.
“End of support” doesn’t mean the apps stop working. Your documents will still open and Word will still run. It means no more security patches, bug fixes or technical help from Microsoft. For a PC that handles email attachments and files from the internet, unpatched software is a real risk. Always check Microsoft’s lifecycle pages for the latest dates.
Apps Included
Office 2024 Professional Plus
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access. Publisher is no longer included: Microsoft is retiring Publisher, and Office 2024 doesn’t ship it.
Office 2021 Professional Plus
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher.
Office 2024 Standard
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. A good fit if you don’t need Access. See Office 2024 Standard.
If you depend on Publisher, keep that in mind. Otherwise Office 2024 covers everything most home users and businesses need.
New Features in Office 2024
Office 2024 brings features that were previously only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers:
Excel
- New functions including IMAGE (insert images into cells), TEXTSPLIT, TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER, VSTACK/HSTACK and other dynamic array helpers.
- Improved performance and accessibility tools.
Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Refreshed, more consistent Fluent design and a new default theme.
- Better accessibility checker and improved support for the ODF 1.4 file format.
- PowerPoint improvements such as easier recording with cameo and better video support.
- Outlook search and calendar improvements.
Office 2021 already introduced dynamic arrays, XLOOKUP, LET and co-authoring improvements, so it’s still capable. Office 2024 builds on that.
What Neither Version Includes
Neither one-time version includes Microsoft Copilot AI features, ongoing feature updates, or 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Those are Microsoft 365 subscription benefits.
Mac Support
Both versions are available for macOS as separate Mac editions. Mac versions follow the same lifecycle idea but require a recent macOS. Check system requirements before buying.

System Requirements (Windows)
- Office 2024: Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Office 2021: Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Neither runs on Windows 7 or 8.1. If you are still on an older system, consider upgrading via our Windows 11 licenses.
Price
Office 2021 is often cheaper, especially from resellers. But with security support already over, the savings come with a trade-off. For most buyers, the small extra cost of Office 2024 buys several more years of patches. Check current prices on the Office 2024 and Office 2021 pages.
Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365
If you always want the latest features, Copilot and cloud storage, Microsoft 365 may suit you better. If you prefer to pay once and own a perpetual license, Office 2024 is the current one-time option.
How Installation and Activation Work
Installation is very similar for both versions. After purchase you receive a 25-character product key and download instructions by email. On Windows, you usually sign in at Microsoft’s Office setup page (or use the download link in your instructions), redeem the key to your Microsoft account, then download and run the installer. Once it’s installed, open any Office app and sign in with the same account to activate.
Tips for a Smooth Install
- Uninstall older or trial versions first. Pre-installed Microsoft 365 trials or older Office versions can conflict with the new installation. Remove them in Settings > Apps.
- Match the bitness. The 64-bit version is the default and right for most users. Use 32-bit only if you depend on old 32-bit add-ins.
- Link the key to your Microsoft account. This makes reinstalling on the same PC much easier later.
- Keep your email and invoice. They are your proof of purchase if you ever need support.
Can I Install on More Than One Device?
Standard one-time Office licenses, including Office 2024 and Office 2021 Home & Business and Professional Plus retail-type licenses, cover one device. If you need Office on several PCs, you need one license per device, or a Microsoft 365 plan, which covers multiple devices per user.

Which Should You Buy?
Buy Office 2024 if you:
- Want security updates until 2029
- Use Excel heavily and want the newest functions
- Run a business and need to stay compliant
Consider Office 2021 only if you:
- Need Publisher
- Use the PC offline or for low-risk tasks, and accept the lack of security updates
- Need a specific version for compatibility with existing systems
Our recommendation for most people: Office 2024 Professional Plus.
FAQ
Is Office 2024 a one-time purchase?
Yes. You pay once and can use it indefinitely on one device. There are no monthly fees.
Can I open Office 2024 files in Office 2021?
Yes. Both use the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats. Files that use brand-new Excel functions may show errors in older versions.
Does Office 2021 still work after October 2026?
Yes, it keeps working. It just doesn’t receive security updates anymore.
Can I upgrade from Office 2021 to 2024?
There’s no discounted upgrade path. You buy an Office 2024 license and install it; your files stay compatible.
Does Office 2024 include Copilot?
No. Copilot is part of Microsoft 365 subscriptions, not the one-time Office 2024 license.
How do I receive my license?
Cronx delivers the license by email with activation instructions. See our FAQs for details.
